Papers of the Gambrel family [manuscript] 1777 (1849-1850) 1860.

The papers consist chiefly of letters, 1849-50, from William, Robert, and Smith Gambrel to Lavinia L. Gambrel regarding the California gold rush. They mention a cholera epidemic, harsh life on the plains, gold prospecting, and exploration in California. Also of interest are an 1838 letter regarding politics in Madison Co, and an 1861 letter regarding avoiding the sale and breakup of a slave family. In addition the collection contains a note signed by William H. Seward, a legal summons, accounts, a poem "The Southern hymn, and some miscellaneous correspondence.

William Henry Seward was born in Florida, Orange County, New York, on May 16, 1801. He was the son of Samuel S. Seward and Mary (Jennings) Seward. He graduated from Union College in 1820, studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1822. In 1823, he moved to Auburn, New York, where he entered Judge Elijah Miller's law office.
